The fifteen years of research preserved in Two Centuries in East Texas provides a record of the early days of East Texas that is the definitive record of the region. It is as important a study of Texas history as any history of the Republic and of the state. Dr. Crocket's pen and ink sketches are preserved in the Archives Collection at the University of Texas, and his original maps and charts were bequeathed to the college at Nacogdoches.

First published in 1932 and republished in 1882, the republication of this book represents the work of many people over several years.

The task was taken on by the small band of Episcopalians at Christ Church, San Augustine, Texas, working thru the Trustees of the George Crocket Memorial Fund. The Trustees were to be the Missionary in Charge, the Bishop's Warden, and Mr. F. I. Tucker of Nacogdoches, Texas, the present executor of the estate of the late Geo. L. Crocket.

At the time of it's publication, the The Right Reverend John E. Hines, Fourth Bishop of Texas, graciously allotted any profits from the sale of the book to Christ Church for a specific purpose. The Reverend Messrs. Edward Hartwell and Edward Rutland guided the beginning of the efforts, and Reverend Mr. W. J. Treat was the Missionary in Charge who pushed it on to near completion. Steve C. Kardell was the Bishop's Warden.

All faithful members of the Church are to be credited with the success of the reprinting of this splendid history, but it is the many people who knew of the book and expressed a desire to see it in print again that are responsible for this edition.

The book is being reproduced exactly as the original, even down to the minor errors that occurred in the original type-setting. Eminent historians will be quick to tell you that the errors were not made by Dr. Crocket.

The following are critical reviews of Dr. Crocket's book

Welcome to a most exciting journey through historical East Texas! Superbly researched. Two Centuries of East Texas is a major study, thorough in its detail and completely captivating. Maurice M. Benitez, D.D., Sixth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas

George L. Crocket's Two Centuries In East Texas, first printed in 1932, is a "must" for everyone interested in Texas History. This is the best area history written in Texas by any author. Dr. Crocket was a fine scholar who portrays the historic figures of East Texas so well he was able to present them in his book with clarity, sympathy, understanding and accuracy. The expanded Index of the 1982 reprint adds much to the usefulness of the book to historic Texas. Edward Dark, President Texas State Historical Association

Dr. Crocket's study on East Texas is the greatest study that has been made of any region of Texas. East Texas has a rich historical background and Dr. Crocket, through his years of research exploited his subject very excellently. I am glad to learn that the book is being republished. Dr. Rupert N. Richardson, Professor of History President Emeritus Hardin-Simmons University Abilene, Texas.
